The product that I decided to look up was my deodorant. I currently am using Dove Clinical Protection, Skin Renew. When using the EWG website, I found out that this product has a toxicity rating of 3. This score signifies that it is a moderate hazard. I was kind of surprised by this score because I did not think this product would be of low hazard. Though it has a moderate hazard rating, I do not think I would change this product because it's at the low end of moderate hazard. Also, this has been one of the few deodorants that has not caused me any type of allergic reaction. Because of this, I am unlikely to change my consumer behaviors in regards to this product specifically. I think people should know about the risks or hazards of any product they use that way they can make an informed decision. Many people do not know about the hazards within their daily products because the company does not want to loose business. However, I strongly believe that if people started becoming more knowledgable in these areas and making better informed decisions, we would have less hazardous products which would benefit us.

ReplyDeleteI think to a certain extent it's important to also consider if a product does help you. As you shared, your current deodorant hasn't caused an allergic reaction. It is possible that there are less hazardous alternatives out there that won't cause an allergic reaction either. At the end of the day, it's about what works for you while also being aware of the risks you may be facing.

I use dove and I know I was quite worried when I realized that my personal care products put me at such a high risk. Now we both can make better decisions about our products.
