I really enjoyed watching the video from Ken Cook. In the video he discussed that they tested the blood of 10 different Americans in order to analyze for 413 different pollutants that are toxic. Out of those 413 toxins, an average of 200 chemicals were found in each individuals blood stream. The scariest part is that over 200 of the chemicals found in those individuals were actually banned 30 years ago. It was later found that industrial pollution exposure was occurring in the womb. Babies were being exposed daily through the umbilical cord. Unfortunately, the umbilical cord does not filter out them toxins and because babies lack a blood brain barrier, they are easily susceptible to these toxins. Because of all the toxins we are exposed to, according to the video, 1 in 3 women will have cancer, and 1 in 2 men will have cancer. This is a high number of individuals and it’s extremely upsetting to know that there isn’t much we can do to prevent it. The last thing he discussed was the Kid Safe Chemical Act which I love. Based on this act, if a chemical appears in the cord blood of a fetus, we are to assume that that chemical is unsafe and companies will need to prove that they are safe. This is great because it puts pressure on the companies to really know what they are selling and to ensure the safety of their products.
That is really scary and I think it is something we should spend more time to focus on. Thank you for bringing some more awareness to this topic by describing it for this blog post.
