M10.8: Occupationally-Related Disease

There are a number of classic occupational diseases. Byssinosis (Brown Lung), Pneumoconiosis (Black Lung), Asbestosis (White Lung) are among them. Select one of these diseases and search the web to learn about the history of the public health campaigns and the current status of the disease and related occupational health policies.
The disease that I decided to obtain more information on is Pneumoconiosis. This disease is also known as Black Lung Disease, and is due to inhalation of asbestos, silica, and coal dust. The World Health Organization discussed that there is the Global Occupational Health Network who attempted to eliminate silicosis which is a form of Pneumoconiosis. This elimination has occurred in the US, however there are various places worldwide that silicosis is still a major health risk for workers. Common symptoms of Pneumoconiosis includes coughing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness.

  1. I chose to explore a similar topic and it is crazy what kinds of diseases can come from our work environments. It is crazy to me that despite having this knowledge we still do not have enough regulations in place to keep people safe.

  2. This topic hits close to home because my godfather died from what seems to be an occupationally-related disease. It also had to do with his respiratory system so these diseases mean a lot to me in a bad way.
