M6.4 Blog: Industrial Farming

Your thoughts about the vanishing of bees (what else have you heard/seen about this issue?)
  • After watching this documentary, I realized that bees are a rapidly declining species. I was not aware of this before. Bees are extremely important within our environment because they are one of the main pollinators of our agricultural system. They carry pollen from one plant to another which helps them grow. Without bees, many plants wouldn’t survive as they often need help with pollination. Though bees are among the less favorite insects, I definitely believe that they should be protected and respected. Before watching this video, I had not heard anything about the importance of bees. However, after doing some more research I found that there are ways in which we can all help protect the bees. Things such as simple as buying honey from local farmers and beekeepers really makes a huge difference. I will take this into account whenever I go to farmers markets.

Dirt! The Movie
  • Dirt is not something that I have ever been taught about or discussed in any classes. Therefore, I did realize the importance of it. As discussed, dirt is a basic building block to our environment. I definitely think that dirt is something that needs to be discussed more because when we truly think about it, a large portion of our greatest landmarks would not exist if it wasn’t for dirt. I strongly believe that there should be a class regarding our environment and the importance of each aspect of our environment during childhood years. I believe that children would be more open to exploring their surroundings if taught and encouraged by others.

Were you able to discover if there is a factory farm near you? Were you already aware of farms near you? What do you think about this?
  • I live in the Santa Clara County. This county is made up mostly of businesses. Because there is no agriculture in my area, I was not surprised to discover that there are no factory farms in Santa Clara County.

  1. After you mentioned having an environmental class during childhood years, I thought that is a great idea. I think that it can help both adults and children learn to appreciate the environment more. Of course, this goes hand in hand with teaching children proper hygiene, like washing their hands after playing in the dirt.

  2. I like the quote, "a little dirt doesnt hurt." I think its true. I think we need to spend more time getting into nature and our environment so that we can build up our immune systems and work better with our environment.
